Terravis Energy claims that its new heat pump system can achieve a seasonal coefficient performance of 3.5 and can deliver 30 C heat indoors at -50 C. CEO Lorenzo Rossi told PV -Magazine That the system could be produced at lower costs than conventional models.
US Startup Terravis Energy develops a residential heat pump that claims that it can maintain high comfort levels without having to be stripped.
“The system is based on our soon patented zero-frost technology that, as the name suggests, never has to go to the thaw mode,” said CEO Lorenzo Rossi told PV -Magazine. “With normal heat pumps, when you go under 0 ° C, for every hour or one and a half heat of the heat, there would be 10 to 40 minutes of defrost cycle, depending on the local temperatures. This means that the heat pump stops pumping hot air and turns the current from the coolant to the outside to melt the ice on the coil. “
Rossi said that colder temperatures require more warmth and longer thawing cycles. There is also the recovery cycle, where the heat pump has to change all its programming to send the heat indoors.
“Both defrosting and the recovery cycles impose significant energy losses and function as parasitic loads that waste considerable amounts of power,” he said.
The system is supplied in two versions, with a weight of 55 kg and 115 kg, with sizes of 18,000 BTUs and 36,000 BTUs.
The heat pump can be installed outside the house, while air treatment units are placed indoors. It is said that it is more energy-efficient than conventional defrost-based systems that use less energy by preventing discycli and retaining uninterrupted heating.
“When the machine is in the thawing cycle, the house will not get anything for 10 to 40 minutes,” said Rossi. “We also found that, because there is no defrosting cycle, the amount of heat that the unit produced was also higher.”
The company claims that even at -50 ° C the heat pump never freezes and still pumps heat.
“With the tests that we did for two hours on – 50 ° C, the machine never stopped and never went to the defrost mode,” Rossi said. “At this very low temperature we still produced 30 ° C heat indoors, which has never been achieved before. With our high heat output, the time needed to heat the house is considerably reduced, leading to substantial savings of electricity. “
The tests used equipment from the Germany -based Testo SE & Co. Kgaa.
“We used precision-certified tools with unique serial numbers to guarantee 100% accuracy. Sensors were placed strategically throughout the system and all data was carefully recorded via video documentation, “said Rossi. “Some components or assembly processes can be outsourced to other countries, but the core production and quality control remain in Germany.”
The system reportedly has a seasonal performance coefficient (SCOP) of 3.5 at -50 C.
“While other companies rely on vapor injection or multiple compressors (double or triple) to improve performance, our system achieves superior efficiency with a simpler, more cost -effective design that reduces production complexity and costs,” Rossi said to offer technical systems on the New heat pump. “We will reveal more when we secure the patent.”
The company also claims that the system is more sustainable than its conventional counterparts, because it does not have to tolerate the tensions of defrost cycles.
“The Defrost cycle reduces the durability of the heat pump by causing an increased frequent circuit between heating and defrost mode that accelerates wear on the compressor, reversing valve and other critical components,” said Rossi. “It causes thermal stress that leads to the expansion and contraction of materials, which increases the risk of cracks and mechanical fatigue, as well as melting frost that introduces water into sensitive components, leading to corrosion, electrical errors and long -term breakdown.”
Rossi said that Zerofrost technology is expanding the life of the system by minimizing mechanical voltage and environmental clothing, but has not shared further technical details.
Terravis Energy is planning to sell the systems in the first instance in Noord -America. The startup is a unit of the American Worksport Ltd., a manufacturer of hybrid and clean energy solutions for the sectors for light truck, overland and global consumer goods.
