In February 2023, construction started at 200 MW of a 300 MW/600 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (Bess) site in Blackhillock, Scotland. Project proponents wanted the world’s first transmission system-related Bess to offer raster stability. Instead of stimulating or replacing threads, Blackhillock offers full active and reactive energy services.
On March 3, 2025, Zenobe, one of the leading owners and operators of the United Kingdom of transmission system-related grid batteries or so-called grid boosters, announced that Blackhillock started commercial activities as a Europe’s largest battery location.
The Blackhillock site is launched in two phases. Phase 1 consists of 200 MW that went live on Monday and another 100 MW will be followed in 2026.
