Ohio-based Toledo Solar, a manufacturer of thin-film solar panels containing cadmium telluride, said it will end all research and development efforts and cease operations immediately.
“Unfortunately, we were unable to license certain technology needed to produce the cadmium telluride panels we were developing for the residential, commercial and industrial markets we targeted,” said Tom Pratt, interim president, treasurer and secretary from Toledo Solar.
Toledo had a production line of 100 MW of modules for residential, commercial and community solar projects.
Cadmium telluride thin film solar panel supplier First Solar filed a lawsuit against Toledo Solar in 2023, leading to the company’s closure. It alleged that Toledo Solar sold Malaysian-made First Solar modules under the Toledo name and claimed they were made in America.
The companies emerged from the lawsuit, and the CEO of Toledo Solar left the company. Pratt and his group at Applied Business Strategy LLC joined the Toledo team following the CEO’s departure.
“Once it was determined that we did not have access to the right technology, we moved to a different business model, but the barriers to success proved to be too high. Ultimately, the Toledo Solar Board determined that there was no viable path forward for the company and voted to cease operations,” concluded Pratt.
