The Trump government has unveiled a plan to develop an AI data center worth 100 billion dollars with Softbank, OpenAi and Oracle, with plans to extend to “at least” $ 500 billion in investments.
Bloomberg has reported that sources in the vicinity of the project claim that it can at least be partially powered by solar energy and energy storage developed by SB Energy, a subsidiary of Softbank.
The Stargate-Mega project surpasses the largest climate and energy spending package ever by former President Joe Biden, the American Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which set aside at least $ 369 billion to support the energy transition and create more than 100,000 jobs. Trump recently ordered a break on all IRA payments.
Bloomberg said the White House, SB Energy, Softbank and Oracle have rejected requests for comments. A OpenAi spokesperson told Bloomberg that the company is considering various options for the way Stargate can help modernize the American energy network, looking at technology ranging from nuclear energy to batteries.
SB Energy has experience with the development of solar energy and storage for data centers, including: Purchase agreement for 942 MW Stroom for Google.
The rapid progress of data centers powered by AI is expected to be responsible for this 8% of the total energy consumption of the US By 2030, compared to 3% in 2022, says Goldman Sachs.
