According to Cornwall Insight, the island of Ireland’s internal electricity market (SEM) is set to see a battery storage boom, with capacity expected to increase fivefold by 2030 in the short to medium term.
The consultancy’s SEM Benchmark Power Curve predicts that in the short to medium term, lithium-ion battery storage capacity, including batteries with a half-hour to four-hour storage capacity, will increase from 2.7 GWh in 2025 to 13.5 GWh in 2030.
If these predictions materialize, the battery storage fleet in Ireland and Northern Ireland will have a capacity of 5 GW, compared to the currently installed 1 GW.
