New renewable power plants in China will no longer be obliged to build up storage to guarantee development rights and grid connection.
Since introduced in 2022, policy mandates for which solar and wind energy projects must be included to include energy storage systems crucial in accelerating storage implementation in China. To date, more than 20 provinces have issued such mandates and some provincial authorities have increased their mandatory ratios for energy storage projects to 20%, a few years ago from 10%.
These requirements have contributed to reducing renewable limitations in China. However, they also have increased operational costs for renewable energy projects and many project owners have reported low usage percentages of their storage systems.
