China Huadian started building a 19.24 GW Wind-Solar-Coal-Storage project in the province of Qinghai in China. The $ 11 billion project delivers 36.5 TWH electricity per year to the province of Guangxi.
China Huadian Corp. Construction of the largest and highest integrated energy basis in Golmud, the province of Qinghai. The project, with a total investment of approximately CNY 80 billion ($ 11 billion), will have the highest share in the renewable capacity in a hybrid energy system designed to export electricity to provinces.
The project will have a totally installed capacity of 19.24 GW, with wind and solar energy that make up 85% of that capacity. The wind and photovoltaic installations will cover approximately 3000 square kilometers of dry, saline solution and rocky terrain. Although Huadian did not announce the exact breakdown, a branch source did not say PV -Magazine That the renewable capacity is greater than 14 GW.
To balance fluctuations of intermittent renewable energy sources, the project includes a large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS), usually 10-15% of the renewable capacity, together with four 660 MW Ultra-Superkruise coal units approved by the Qinghai Development and Reform Commission.
These plants will have indirect air cooling, the des sulfuration of wet flue gas and denitrification systems, supported by a special railway line and a 750 kV station. The thermal component is expected to cost CNY 11.5 billion.
State Grid Corp. From China, an ± 800 kV Ultra-Hoog voltage (UHV) develops direct power transfer line, the “Qinghai-Guangxi UHV DC project” to transfer power with a capacity of 8 GW. The project supplies 36.5 TWH of clean energy to Guangxi annually, the relief of regional power shortages and meeting 14% of the electricity needs of the province 2024.
Huadian said it aims to complete the project by 2027, after a synchronized development approach that integrates the renewable generation, shipping capacity and transmission infrastructure.
The energy basis will also serve as a national research platform, aimed at integrated energy systems, multi-energy complementarity and digital applications in large-scale energy hubs. Additional research will focus on desert control and ecological recovery, to support the sustainability of China and environmental goals.
