The production industry of the solar panel is growing in the United States, but demand still exceeds current domestic supply. If every American factory runs at full capacity, the country should produce nearly 50 GW solar panels every year. Immediately Expected 2024 Installation percentage From 40 GW, realistic, the United States should be able to fulfill all panel orders from the coasts. But the data shows differently.
American solar panel assemblers not only make no nowhere near 50 GW of panels, the country imports more finished panels than it needs for one calendar year. Solar Power World Watched data from the American International Trade Committee to see the bigger picture.
How many cells and panels import the United States versus produce?
The United States removes the capacity of the United States of First Solar. Suniva was the only manufacturer of silicon cells that came online online before the end of 2024, and the capacity of 1 GW has probably not yet been reached. So the best measure for how many solar panels the country makes is to look at the import of silicon cells.
Data shows that in 2024 the United States imported 13.89 GW of silicon cells. The import of solar cells has increased all year round, probably the more new module assemblers came online. If First Solar produced its entire 10.7 GW in 2024, which contributes to the import of silicon cells means that American solar panel companies could have produced around 25 GW of finished panels in 2024.
Data also shows that the country imported 54.3 GW of finished panels in 2024, because project developers have ensured sufficient supplies to meet timelines through safe cherishing.
Where do the United States get its solar cells?
With various tariff fights and AD/CVD cases, it has become more important to know the country of origin for solar cells. It is not surprising that the most imported silicon solar cells come from Southeast Asia. Note: Only 490 kW of solar cells were imported directly from China in 2024.
Which countries do the United States provide solar panels?
The top 4 countries from which the United States import solar panels are the same four countries in the current AD/CVD research: Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and Cambodia. Import from India, Indonesia and Laos. Remarkable: 621.4 MW of panels came from Mexico and 122.8 MW came from Canada. The United States imported 68.3 MW of panels directly from China.
