According to an analysis by AleaSoft Energy Forecasting, average electricity prices in the main European markets showed heterogeneous behavior in the second week of January.
The consultancy noted a mixed picture in the markets analyzed compared to the previous week. Weekly price averages rose in the Belgian, British, Dutch, German and Scandinavian markets, but fell in the French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish markets.
Average electricity prices exceeded €85 ($87.58)/MWh in all markets except the Nordic market, which continued to have the lowest price, averaging €50.50/MWh.
The British market overtook the Italian market and recorded the highest average price of the week, at €152.37/MWh. The UK market also saw the highest daily price of the week, reaching €272.43 on January 10, the highest price on this market since December 2022.
AleaSoft says a drop in weekly average gas prices and an increase in wind energy production have led to lower prices in some markets. It attributed the increases in other markets to a rise in electricity demand.
During the third week of January, AleaSoft expects prices to rise in most European electricity markets, driven by an increase in demand and a decline in wind energy production.
In the second week of January, solar energy production increased in France and Germany, but fell in Italy, Portugal and Spain.
Both the French and Portuguese markets recorded their highest value of solar energy on one day in January, on January 12. The French market reached 51 GWh, while the Portuguese market reached 12 GWh.
AleaSoft predicts that solar energy production will increase again this week in Germany, while production will also increase in Italy and Spain.
